Snowdrops

Weather:  Sunny, mild, damp, 7 degrees C
Spotted: Couple of sparrows, magpies and 20 odd seagulls
Today felt like the first day of spring – well one of those February days that lull you into wanting to plant stuff in the ground only for a last minute frost to hit hard in a few nights time.  I love this time of year – the first of the snowdrops are out and all the daffs are starting to come up from underground.  Those white delicate little flowers lifted my mood and I felt happy.  The rhubarb seems to have recovered and I found lots of little garlic’s in lovely clumps all over the front part of the first plot.
The ground is soft and easily dug through at the moment and the weeds; crouch grass, bind weed, creeping buttercup - lovely yellow flowers but a real menace to fruit and veg, bramble and all kind of other little growers including some kind of moss are making a go of it.  If I keep them clear and keep the grass short especially around the edges then I should stay on top of them.  I try to do the least bit of digging as I can and just use a small trowel to get to each weed individually.  All the good bacteria is quite close to the top of the soil, so I don’t want to disturb it too much and I don’t like waking the worms up either because they do a great job.

Thank goodness for snowdrops.  Coming soon - Pulsatilla.
