Fire and Compost

Weather: bright, sunny then foggy, cold and damp, 4 degrees C

Spotted: 2 Magpies, couple of Great Tits and lots of little brown jobbies - Oh and a blackbird

It was freezing and we had a fire and got warm.  We put the remainder of the compost on the three new bushes, not too close to or covering the stem as this part of the plant shouldn’t be under the ground.  When we were going home it got really foggy on Mossley Hill.

Goji and Goose Berry

Weather:  Cloudy, misty, 5 degrees C

Spotted:  Not a thing

Wanted to have a check on the Goji Berry and the Gooseberry.  They are both about the same size so want to just meansure them and keep an eye on them.  Misty and gothic down the allotment.  Didn't stay long.  Had really good nut roast in The Egg with sisters and nimblings.  Look forward to Oliver Twist next week.

Compost Blog; caring for Goji Berries

Weather:  Foggy, damp, wet, rolling fog, cloudy, clear blue skies, sunny, warm then cold, 4 degrees C
Spotted:  2 Great Tits, Wood Pigeon
There was no one at the allotment today so very quiet and peaceful.  Thought I would check the compost heap to make sure there weren’t any rats living in it.  I was surprised to find excellent quality compost made from food from the kitchen, toilet rolls, egg cartons and straw.  Didn’t think I’d ever achieve that.  I’ve put some of it on the beds.  Next time I will put some around the new current bushes.

Listened to an amazing play on Radio 4 about Alzheimers.  It actually kept me listening on the allotment and enjoying the sunshine.  It was about how music can help people with the illness.  Lots of singing in it like Night and Day, It's a Long Way To Tiperary, When You're Smiling, Pack Up Your Troubles and I'm sure Hello Dolly wasn't far away.
Took a chance with the Goji berry and pruned it back hard.  Seemed that was the right thing to do.

Weeds, weeds and lush blue skies

Weather: Warm and mild, sunny blue skies, 8 degrees C
Spotted:  Seagull and little brown jobbies flying around too fast above me
Spent a couple of hours down allotment today just to wind down and think.  I did some weeding and shifting and sorting.  I pulled out the dead Marigolds which are prolific and cleared around the little pond I’ve created for frogs and birds.  I can’t wait to really get going.  The shed is still holding.

Black Cat and Seagulls

Weather: Bright, sunny, damp, cold, 5 degrees C

Spotted: Black cat, Seagulls, 5 or 6 Great Tits

Beautiful day today and so raced down to the allotment.  Everything looks pretty much as it did a week ago but really went just to enjoy the sunshine and the open blueness of the large sky and to re-charge my own batteries.  Sat and sat enjoying the sunshine.   A massive long worm crossed over my shoe and the black cat that visits regularly came looking for some strokes and got them.  He’s a big cat, demanding and playful with huge claws – got him chasing a string of hay.  Good to hear the birds and took a photo of the allotment and the young apple tree at the front.  Feel refreshed and can’t wait to get planting and sowing.
